Maui Girl Cooks

“One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.” Luciano Pavarotti

About

My name is Sharon & I am the author of Maui Girl Cooks. I am passionate about food, so I blog about healthy food, food that is perhaps not so healthy, nutrition information, useful resources, foodie fiction, foodie movies, our cat Jack and more.

I live on Maui with my husband of 35 years, and our cat Jack.  My dad was in the Air Force, so I moved around quite a bit as a kid.  We moved from Virginia to Oahu when I was in the eighth grade, and that is where I met my husband.  After spending 2 ½ years at the University of Hawaii, taking classes toward a degree in nutrition, we moved to the Bay Area, where we stayed for about 10 years.  I went back to school at San Jose State and decided to go into teaching instead of nutrition; I’m sure I went into teaching because of my fourth grade teacher Mrs. Mauck-I loved her.  I am still interested in nutrition, as is my husband, and we read a lot about it and integrate what we learn into our diet; I must say that we are good at doing this.  Growing disillusioned with the cost of living and sheer number of people in the Bay Area, we decided to travel around the country over 3 years to find a new place to live.  Our first trip was 1 ½ months in a Datsun 240-Z, the second trip was 3 months in a Datsun B210 and our last trip was 6 months in a 19 foot Chinook camper.  Traveling around the country when we were so young was a fantastic experience; I highly recommend it if you can pull it off.  We decided to land in the Seattle area.  I taught elementary school in the Central Kitsap School District for 20+ years and had a wonderful time doing it.  It is absolutely beautiful there & we had many great experiences and friends, but after 20+ years of Pacific Northwest weather, we decided to return to the warm, laid-back island lifestyle, this time on Maui.  Our cat Jack made the trip as well, and the three of us love living here!

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Aloha & Happy Eating!

P.S. I’ve been so busy and I am now trying to take advantage of my holiday break to catch up on the food science course! Have you completed it yet?

    • Hi Ada, I am honored to be nominated by you for my first award; thank you so much! I had better get busy figuring out who I will nominate. :x) No, I have not completed the class yet. I have watched all the lectures up through week 8, and have been doing the homework/labs when they are due. I see they are offering the other class we took, The Science of Gastronomy, again. Wonder what changes they made?? Happy New Year! ~Sharon > Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2013 19:30:39 +0000 > To: skayewright@hotmail.com >
